Antimicrobial surfaces

A new approach to antimicrobial surfaces and structural antibiotics

The growing resistance of bacteria against conventional antibiotics is shifting the research focus to new functional materials with antibacterial properties. This project gathers inspiration from the antimicrobial function of amphiphilic tubular proteins and seeks the design of new synthetic tubular polymer structures on the nanometer scale to study and optimize their non-specific mechanisms to kill bacteria. Towards this goal, we combine advanced polymer synthesis with biophysical chemistry and microbiology expertise. The generated know-how is expected to guide the rational design of advanced bioinspired antimicrobial materials.
