NCCR PI new University of Fribourg rector

NCCR Bio-Inspired Materials Principal Investigator Prof. Katharina Fromm has been elected as the University of Fribourg’s next Rector. Fromm, who is a professor in the Department of Chemistry, will take on her new role in February 2024.

The university’s assembly, which brings together professors and representatives of staff and students, chose Fromm over her colleague Prof. Christian Bochet, the former Dean of the Faculty of Sciences and Medicine.

Fromm, who must still be formally elected by the university Senate, will succeed Prof. Astrid Epiney next year, making her the second woman to lead the institution. She is already a vice-rector, in charge of research and innovation.

Fromm was born in Germany, and also grew up in France and the United States. She has been the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry at the university since 2006.
