Pupa Gilbert and her team investigate the formation of biominerals including their structure and composition using sophisticated characterization techniques. For example, they study the formation of CaCO3 in nacre using a polarization-dependent imaging contrast mapping method. These insights might enable establishing new bio-inspired synthesis routes that offer a superior control over the structure and properties of synthetic CaCO3-based materials.
